Esha Gupta's post came after many celebrities shared their support following the India-Maldives tension. Last week, PM Modi shared various photos from Lakshadweep and encouraged people to visit the Island. Reacting to the same, a council member of the Progressive Party of Maldives, Zahid Rameez, gave a controversial statement and said that India will never be able to compete with Maldives.

Rameez's tweet read, "The move is great. However, the idea of competing with us is delusional. How can they provide the service we offer?" The statement did not go down well and netizens demanded an apology for mocking the Indian Prime Minister. While Rameez refused to apologise, many Bollywood celebrities supported and shared posts to laud PM Modi and support India.

Meanwhile, in an official statement, the government of Maldives said, "The Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives...Moreover, the relevant authorities of the Government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks. The Government believes that freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners."
