The phrase ‘to ax one's own foot’ is all that one can think about when coming across the ‘Boycott Maldives’ trend that is spreading like wildfire on the internet. One might be living under a rock if they are unaware of the ongoing ‘Maldives vs Lakshadweep’ debate, which was triggered after Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared pictures and videos of his Lakshadweep visit on social media. Apart from Lakshadweep and its beauty garnering major popularity, the posts also received some questionable remarks from some Maldives ministers. As soon as the remarks went viral, Indians took no time in banding together as they made the ‘Boycott Maldives’ and 'Maldives Out' trend on the internet, along with ‘Lakshadweep’.

From posts advocating and promoting the beauty of other tourist places in India to people opposing the Maldives government over the ‘India Out’ trend in the island nation, people completely took over social media. Maldives government, on the other hand, has reported suspended three ministers over the matter,

Taking to the internet, most promoted Indian tourism, and revolted against the ‘India Out’ trend in Maldives, while others commented on boycotting their visits to Maldives. Some even shared screenshots of cancelling their bookings to the island nation.

“We welcome all the tourists of the world to our Lakshadweep . Promote India tourism. #BycottMaldives #Lakshadweep,” said a user.

“No this is not Maldives. These are Stunning Kerala Backwaters. Incredible India #BycottMaldives,” said a second person.

“No...it's not MALDIVES. It's the Coral Islands of ''NETRANI" in Karnataka, Bharat. Promote Bharat tourism. #bycottmaldives,” said a third person.

“Sorry Maldives, My Country Bharat is my Pride. Booking Cancelled. #BycottMaldives #MaldivesKMKB,” said another.

“India Out- Are they leaving?  Yes, 90% tourist #BycottMaldives,” said another.
