Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan's Baghban is a family drama released in 2003. The Hindi film industry is renowned for its iconic movies and one such timeless classic is Baghban. Directed by Ravi Chopra, this family drama has left an indelible mark on audiences. In a recent interview with Bharathi S Pradhan, Hema Malini revealed a surprising detail about her role in the film.

Initially, she was reluctant to take on the role of a mother to four grown sons. She recalled, “Before the mahurat of Baghban, Ravi Chopra met me and told me that he wanted me to play the role exactly as he envisioned. He narrated the story to me, and I think it was his blessings that made the film successful. People still talk about it today. When I was hearing the story from Ravi Chopra, my mother was with me. After he left, I said, ‘Chaar itne bade bade ladko ke maa ka role karne ko bol raha hai. How can I do all this?’ My mother said, ‘No, no. You must do it. The story is good.’”

Thanks to her mother's insistence, Hema Malini accepted the role, which became one of her most memorable performances. The film portrays the emotional journey of an elderly couple, played by Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, who have been married for 40 years. The story takes a turn when Amitabh Bachchan's character retires, and the couple reunites with their four sons to discuss their future support. However, none of the sons want to take care of both parents, forcing them to live separately. This heartbreaking narrative resonated deeply with audiences, sparking widespread discussions about family values and elder care.

Apart from Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, Baghban featured Aman Verma, Samir Soni, Saahil Chaddha and Nasir Khan as the sons. The film also had a special cameo appearance by Salman Khan. Made on a budget of Rs 10 crore, the movie went on to earn around Rs 41 crore at the box office, proving its massive success. Baghban can be watched for free on YouTube.
