India at Golden Globes: The 81st edition of the Golden Globe Awards is slated for January 8 at 6:30 am IST, offering Indian audiences a live broadcast from Beverly Hills, California. Lionsgate Play will exclusively stream the event for Indian viewers, beginning at 6:30 am on January 8, while the red-carpet spectacle will commence at 5:30 am. The 2024 Golden Globes will be hosted by comedian Jo Koy, with a star-studded lineup of presenters including Michelle Yeoh, Will Ferrell, Angela Bassett, and Amanda Seyfried. While historically Hollywood-centric, the Golden Globes have seen India's presence in recent years, with significant wins.

Despite the absence of Indian film or soundtrack nominations this year, it's worth acknowledging India's impactful journey at the Golden Globe Awards in recent times.

1- Do Ankhen Barah Haath

In 1957, the historic connection between India and the Golden Globes began with the film 'Do Ankhen Barah Haath,' marking the first Indian movie to secure a nomination. This groundbreaking achievement was unprecedented at a time when such recognition seemed unimaginable. Directed by V Shantaram, the film not only earned a nomination but also received accolades, including a Silver Bear at the 8th Berlin International Film Festival and a Samuel Goldwyn International Film Award.

2- Gandhi

In 1983, Richard Attenborough's 'Gandhi' secured nominations across multiple categories at the Golden Globe Awards, encompassing Best Actor, Best Screenplay, New Star of the Year, and Best Director. Triumphantly, the film emerged victorious in all the nominated categories at the Golden Globes. Richard Attenborough won Best Director award. The movie also won in Best Picture - Non-English Language category.

3- Salaam Bombay

4- Monsoon Wedding

In 2002, Mira Nair received yet another commendable Golden Globe nomination for her directorial. The film was nominated in the Best Picture - Non-English Language category but faced stiff competition, ultimately losing to 'No Man's Land' from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

5- AR Rahman

In 2009, music director AR Rahman, etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian to clinch a Golden Globe. His exceptional soundtrack and mesmerising background music crafted for the 2007 film 'Slumdog Millionaire' earned him this prestigious honour.

6- RRR

In 2023, SS Rajamouli's blockbuster 'RRR', starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, made a significant impact, emerging as one of the most monumental hits. Among its achievements, the film's track 'Naatu Naatu' soared to incredible heights, transcending borders to become a global phenomenon in pop culture. Notably, this song made history by securing a Golden Globe award in the Best Original Song category and later adding an Academy Award to its accolades.
