Tanuja has two daughters Kajol and Tanishaa Mukerji. In an interview with Instant Bollywood, Kajol commented on a mother's role in a child's life, “Mothers never tell you what they are going through, they never tell you how hard it was to do what they did. Like, I look at my childhood today and think, ‘Oh my God, I had such a wonderful childhood, never did I think what it cost my mother to give me that childhood’ and to make it so easy and fabulous for me."

She further added, “But now as a parent, I realise that… I respect her even more, every day since I have had my daughter. Because I realise the things she did with me as a parent were outstandingly brave, cool and so very forward thinking coming from the society and the time that she did. I commend her. I hope I am half as brave as her, maybe not as brave.”

Recently on Tanuja's birthday, Kajol took to her Instagram and thanked fans for their warm wishes.
