Kusha Kapila, known for her acting and social media presence, expressed feeling dehumanised by a recent roast where jokes about her body and divorce were unexpectedly harsh. She stirred controversy after her appearance on Aashish Solanki's 'Pretty Good Roast Show', where jokes about her recent divorce sparked widespread criticism. The incident prompted her to share a cryptic Instagram post featuring a quote on resilience, set to Curtis Mayfield's song 'Move'.

She wrote, "When someone’s trying to disempower you, it’s their garbage. It’s not yours to store. Let it slide off you." Days after Kusha Kapila's revelation about her experience filmed in January and recently uploaded on YouTube

What exactly happened?

The actor and content creator Kusha Kapila faced significant challenges after being roasted by her peers at the abovementioned comedy show. While she expected to participate in a roast, she was unprepared for the intense content, which included jokes about her divorce, infidelity, and other personal matters from comedians such as Samay Raina, Aaditya Kulshreshth, Shreya Priyam Roy, and Gurleen Pannu.

One of the joke included her divorce from long-time partner Zohrawar Singh Ahluwalia and implications about her path to fame. Despite calls from her fan club to remove the video from all platforms, Kusha has remained steadfast throughout the ordeal.

How Kusha Reacted To The Roast?

Kusha Kapila clarified her stance on the roast and said, "It was done in good faith and for a friend. Nobody has been paid (neither comics nor guests) for it so argument that people are 'being paid big fat cheques to hear their insults’ is baseless."

"I had no idea what was in store for me. Maybe I should have asked for a script and known better but since friends were involved I didn’t. Rookie mistake. While I endured some of the really raspy jokes in front of a live audience and technicians, I absolutely was not okay for it to play for millions of people since some jokes straight up dehumanised me. It was shockingly unkind," she added.

Further, she stressed, "If I hadn’t let the episode go live, I would have been called a coward and a crybaby and a different kind of trolling would have ensued. Over the course of last six months during negotiations, I have been told that I deserve these jokes and that as a divorced woman I should have seen this coming. Maybe I should have and maybe silence on this topic is seen as cowardice but it’s mostly choosing peace over endless discourse that will likely villainise women."

Kusha Kapila firmly stated that her involvement in roast comedy has come to an end. Reflecting on her third experience as a subject, she emphasised that she will "never sit for one again lol," especially without prior knowledge of the content. She expressed that her previous two roast experiences were positive, but this recent one could have been better if everyone involved had been prepared for what was to come.

What Kusha Earlier Said?

In response to the question during AMA session, Kusha Kapila answered, "Not my first time on the rodeo. In the large scheme of things, nothing matters. Probably when I have processed all of it, will speak about it on a level-headed podcast (lol do we have any) or maybe never. We will see. This profile continues to be a safe space for my female and queer followers."

Kusha Kapila-Zorawar Singh's Divorce

Kusha Kapila and Zorawar Singh Ahluwalia tied the knot in 2017 after a period of dating. They confirmed their divorce in June last year with a joint statement. They expressed that while it was a difficult decision, they mutually agreed to part ways as their current paths diverged from what they both sought in life.

"Zorawar and I have mutually decided to part ways. This hasn’t been an easy decision by any measure but we know it’s the right one at this point in our lives. The love and life we have shared together continues to mean everything for us but sadly, what we seek currently for ourselves doesn’t align. We gave it our all, until we couldn’t anymore."
