Jailer (Amazon Prime Video)
The action-comedy film directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, stars Rajinikanth, Vinayakan, Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah Bhatia, Vasanth Ravi, Mirnaa Menon, Yogi Babu and Sunil, with guest appearances from Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Jackie Shroff. The plot follows 'Tiger' Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer on a mission to capture an eccentric idol smuggler named Varman. Jailer was released in theaters on August 10, 2023, receiving positive reviews from critics and becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023, as well as the sixth highest-grossing Indian film of the year and the second highest-grossing Tamil film of all time. A sequel is currently in development.
Annaatthe (Netflix)
The action drama film directed and co-written by Siva, features Rajinikanth alongside Khushbu, Meena, Nayanthara and Keerthy Suresh, with supporting roles played by Jagapathi Babu, Prakash Raj, Soori, Pandiarajan, Sathyan and Sathish. The music was composed by D. Imman, cinematography was handled by Vetri, stunts were arranged by Dhilip Subbarayan, and the film was edited by Ruben. The story centers on Kaalaiyan, a sarpanch (village leader) in Thanjavur, who is determined to protect his sister from a businessman and his older brother.
Kabali (Netflix)
The action drama directed by Pa. Ranjith, stars Rajinikanth alongside Winston Chao, Radhika Apte, Sai Dhanshika, Kishore, Dinesh Ravi, Kalaiyarasan, John Vijay, Rosyam Nor, Nassar and Mime Gopi. The plot follows Kabali, an aging gangster released from prison, who embarks on a quest for revenge against his rivals while searching for his presumed dead wife, Kumudhavalli and daughter Yogitha.
Kaala (Netflix)
The action drama film directed and co-written by Pa. Ranjith, features Rajinikanth in the titular role, alongside Nana Patekar, Eswari Rao, Huma Qureshi, Samuthirakani, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, K. The story revolves around Karikalan 'Kaala,' the leader of Dharavi, who fights to protect his community and land from being seized and evicted by Haridev 'Hari Dhadha,' a ruthless minister. The film grossed ₹160 crore and was moderately successful at the box office.
Darbar (Disney+ Hotstar)
Directed by A.R. Murugadoss, produced by Allirajah Subaskaran under Lyca Productions, the film features Rajinikanth alongside Suniel Shetty, Nayanthara, and Nivetha Thomas. The storyline follows Aaditya Arunasalam (Rajinikanth), the commissioner of Mumbai Police, as he tackles rampant drug trafficking and prostitution in the city. However, he uncovers a significant controversy linked to an international drug lord, which leads him to pursue a hidden agenda. Upon release, it received mixed reviews from critics and grossed between ₹202 crore and ₹250 crore at the box office, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2020.
Thalapathi (Amazon Prime Video)
The gangster drama directed and written by Mani Ratnam stars Rajinikanth and Mammootty, featuring Arvind Swamy in his debut, along with Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, Shobana and Geetha in supporting roles. The story revolves around a brave slum dweller who forms a friendship with a powerful gangster, while a district collector attempts to undermine their bond. The narrative draws inspiration from the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana from the Hindu epic, Mahabharata.
