My Oxford Year was one of Netflix’s most anticipated romantic comedy movies of the year. It starred Sofia Carson, who gained popularity from another Netflix movie Purple Hearts, and Corey Mylchreest, who won over the ladies with his charismatic role of young King George lll in the web series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. My Oxford Year brought the duo together to depict the story of an American girl who fell in love with a British local.
My Oxford Year is a tender story about love and loss, which shows the importance of finding hope in unexpected places. It has an interesting narrative that deals with the bitter-sweet choices that shape our lives. More than just a love story, My Oxford Year is about how two people can change each other’s lives in quiet, profound ways, and how sometimes, love means letting go. And netizens were not ready for this! Going by the genre, people assumed the movie to be lighthearted, just like any other fun rom-com story. But My Oxford Year took the viewers by surprise.
In the movie, Anna (played by Sophia), falls in love with (Corey’s character) Jamie. After spending some time with him, Anna gets to know that Jamie is suffering from cancer and refuses to opt for treatment. As the movie nears its end, Jamie passes away, leaving Anna with several heartfelt memories.

Some netizens expressed their emotional state on social media after watching the movie and explained how they bawled their eyes out throughout the movie. A user wrote, “MY HEART IS COMPLETELY BROKEN.” Another user said, “I thought My Oxford Year would be a romcom but it ended up destroying me.” Another stunned netizen wrote, “When you realize the romcom you were watching is actually not a romcom.” A disheartened netizen commented, “They said it was a romcom but the only comedy part was us being fooled that it might end well but it was still worth the pain.

While people talked about the emotional depth of the movie, some users compared it to Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin's Me Before You. Both movies showed a love story that blossomed during a character’s terminal illness. An online user commented, “I think i’ve seen this film before… and i didn’t like the ending.”
Apart from Sophia and Corey, the movie also stars a talented cast including Dougray Scott (Jamie's father), Catherine McCormack (Jamie's mother), Harry Trevaldwyn (Anna's roommate and best friend), Esmé Kingdom (Maggie Timbs), Poppy Gilbert (Cecelia Knowles) plus Nikhil Parmar, Romina Cocca, Yadier Fernández, Nia Anisah and Hugh Coles.
