The Madhya Pradesh police are considering challenging the interim bail granted to stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui in the controversial 2021 case. According to PTI, the Tukoganj Police Station may contest Bigg Boss 17 winner's bail in the chargesheet. Jitendra Singh Yadav, the in-charge of Tukoganj police station, stated "Our investigation into the matter is ongoing, and the chargesheet has not yet been submitted to the court."
The delay in filing the chargesheet is reportedly due to pending permission approval from the Madhya Pradesh state government. Once granted, the chargesheet will be filed in compliance with the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
Three years have passed since Munawar Faruqui narrowly avoided a scandalous release from jail, facing serious charges. He was accused of making offensive remarks about Hindu deities during a stand-up comedy performance in Indore. Released on February 6, 2021, after spending 35 days in Indore's Central Jail, he secured interim bail by the Supreme Court. In November of the same year, he announced on social media that he had decided to quit stand-up comedy.
During the same period, the Madhya Pradesh police filed a plea to pursue charges against him under section 295A of the Indian Penal Code. However, the state government has not yet given approval to file the chargesheet. For the unversed, under section 295A of the Indian Penal Code, the punishment is stipulated as follows, "Whoever, with deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of any class of citizens of India, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs or by visible representations or otherwise, insults or attempts to insult the religion or the religious beliefs of that class, shall be liable for imprisonment of either description for a term that may extend to three years, or with a fine, or with both."
