The 71st National Film Awards celebrated the best of Indian cinema for the year 2023. The event took place at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on September 23. Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and several eminent personalities across languages and genres were honoured with the National Award by President Droupadi Murmu. Rani Mukerji received the Best Actress award for her performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway. She arrived in traditional attire for the ceremony.
Directed by Ashima Chibber, Mrs. Chatterjee VS Norway tells the story of an immigrant and determined mother who fights against all odds to regain the custody of her children. Rani's powerful performance resonated deeply with audiences and was widely praised by both critics and fans. The film also starred Neena Gupta, Jim Sarbh and Bengali actor Anirban Bhattacharya in pivotal roles.

Earlier, Rani Mukerji also won the The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards 2024 for Best Actress for the same role. Throughout her Bollywood career, Rani has delivered a wide variety of roles in both commercial and experimental cinema, but it was her emotionally charged portrayal of a mother that earned her the prestigious National Award.
The 71st National Film Awards were officially announced on August 1, instantly becoming the talk of the town. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan received his first National Award for his role in the Blockbuster film Jawan. He shared the honour with talented actor Vikrant Massey, who also won his first Best Actor National Award for his performance in 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. 12th Fail also received the Best Feature Film Award. Apart from these, Sanya Malhotra starrer Kathal – A Jackfruit Mystery was honoured as the Best Hindi Film.
