Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently taked about his most-celebrated works, Gangs Of Wasseypur. The director said that he hates Waseypur. He said in a podcast with Digital documentary, "Mujhe Wasseypur se saqt nafrat hai. Jab bhi koi aadmi bolta hai na, ‘Sir Wasseypur,’ man karta hai joota utarkar maru. (I absolutely hate Wasseypur. Whenever someone mentions it, I feel like taking off my shoe and hitting them)." The filmmaker’s frustration isn’t directed at the film, but at the way audiences responded to it when it first released. Anurag explained that if viewers had supported his work at the time, his career path and livelihood could have turned out very differently.
Anurag Kashyap said, "Jab Wasseypur release hui, tab to tumne dekhi nahi. Chaar din chali thi theatre mein. Phir cinema hall mein Tiger Zinda Hai aa gayi. Chaar din mein uss picture ne 22 crore kamaye. Studio usko flop bolta hai, aur uss film ko lekar aap chahte ho ki main dobara banaun? Kyu banaun main? (When Wasseypur was released, no one watched it. It ran in theatres for just four days before Ek Tha Tiger took over. It earned Rs 22 crore in those four days, yet the studio called it a flop. And now you want me to make another one?)
"Tumhare liye kyu banaun main?Agar tum meri film cinema hall mein jaakar dekhte, to mera ghar usse chal raha hota. Mera ghar tumhari wajah se nahi chal raha hai. Fayda nuksaan ke liye agar tum film banane aaye ho… (Why should I make it for you? If you had watched my film in theatres, my household would be running because of it. But it’s not, and if you’re making films just for profit and loss, you’re in the wrong place)," he further added.

About Gangs of Wasseypur: Gangs Of Wasseypur is a 2012 Indian Hindi-language epic crime film directed by Anurag Kashyap and written by Kashyap and Zeishan Quadri. The movie stars an ensemble cast, featuring Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadda, Reema Sen, Piyush Mishra, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vineet Kumar Singh, Pankaj Tripathi, Huma Qureshi, Anurita Jha and Tigmanshu Dhulia.
The film was was screened in its entirety at the 2012 Cannes Directors' Fortnight, marking one of the only Hindi-language films to achieve this. It was also screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2013. Gangs Of Wasseypur received nominations for Best Film and Best Director for Kashyap at the 55th Asia-Pacific Film Festival and won for Best Audiography at the 60th National Film Awards, while Siddiqui won a Special Mention for acting at the same ceremony.
