Ektaa Kapoor cemented her reputation as a television mogul with the monumental success of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, a show that transcended traditional entertainment to become a national phenomenon. The serial, which ran from 2000 to 2008, turned its lead actress Smriti Irani into a household name as the perfect daughter-in-law, Tulsi Virani. By putting the lives of women and the dynamics of family relationships at its core, the show offered a new perspective on female-oriented storytelling. Audiences across the country were captivated by its emotional depth and dramatic arcs, with many families making it a nightly ritual. Kapoor and Irani both climbed the stairs of success together with the show's unprecedented popularity.

Ektaa Kapoor’s show, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, didn't just tell a story; it created a cultural phenomenon that resonated deeply with viewers, forever altering the landscape of Indian television. The filmmaker recently attended the India Today Conclave Mumbai 2025 and talked about her journey and how her show depicted the real-life issues of women.

When asked about what made her relaunch Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bauhu Thi, the filmmaker expressed, "I and Smriti had a lot of conversations around random things like parenting and motherhood. I was like we are going to complete 25 years of 'Kyunki...' in six to eight months. She (Smriti) said, “Let's just complete that 2,000 number. Other shows have completed 3,000 – 4,000 episodes”. I told her, 'You are going to be so busy. How will I get to shoot with you?’ She was like, "Anything for 'Kyunki….” She has always had a passion for the show because it is also something we have an emotional connect with. Everyone involved with the old 'Kyunki...' came back at a heartbeat."

Ektaa Kapoor also praised her dear friend and politician Smriti Irani’s never-give-up attitude and braveness. She stated, "Smriti is anything but not brave. Her bravado comes from her absolutely never-say-die spirit. She is willing to learn. I always tell her, 'You and I have great thrill issues.' We need to push ourselves to test all the time and that's the only way we keep ourselves alive."

The filmmaker mentioned how the show represented every woman’s issues that no one discussed. She exclaimed that the show addressed several judgments and misconceptions that revolved around women at that time. Further, during the interview, Ektaa candidly shared that she would love to cast actress Vidya Balan for her serial 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii' and Kareena Kapoor for her show 'Kasuatii Zindagi Kay'.
