Jr NTR and director Trivikram Srinivas recently announced their upcoming mythological film based on Lord Murugan, also known as Kartikeya. While the first-look poster generated excitement among fans, it also sparked a heated debate on social media. A caption shared by producer Naga Vamsi has led to discussions around mythology, cultural identity, and the representation of Lord Murugan, with users expressing sharply divided opinions online.
Jr NTR's Lord Murugan Film Sparks Debate Over 'Born in the North' Caption
The controversy began after producer Naga Vamsi shared the film's announcement poster with the caption: "Born in the North. Forged in the heart of the nation. Worshipped in the South. Now, a story meant for the entire world."
While the poster hinted that Lord Murugan or his divine spear, the Vel, could play a key role in the story, many Tamil users objected to the phrase "Born in the North." They argued that it misrepresented a deity who is deeply connected with Tamil culture.
Users Accuse Makers of Ignoring Lord Murugan's History
Several social media users claimed that Lord Murugan is not only a Hindu deity but also an important symbol of Tamil identity, language, and history. Many referred to him as "Tamil Kadavul" and pointed to Sangam-era literature and the Kurinji region of ancient Tamil Nadu as evidence of his cultural roots.
Others also mentioned the six sacred Murugan temples, known as Arupadai Veedu, all located in Tamil Nadu, saying they reflect his deep historical association with the state.
One user wrote, "If you don't know who Lord Murugan is, stop using him for content. He is 'Tamil Kadavul,' not a prop for cinematic imagination."
Another commented, "'Born in the North'? That's completely wrong. Lord Murugan is worshipped as 'Tamil Kadavul' and is deeply rooted in Tamil culture and tradition."

Others Defend The Film's Perspective
A different section of users argued that Lord Murugan's identity extends beyond Tamil Nadu. They noted that he is worshipped across India under different names, including Kartikeya, Skanda, and Subramanya Swamy.
Some also referred to Hindu scriptures that describe his birth at the sacred Saravana Poigai, which is associated with the Himalayan region. According to them, Murugan cannot be confined to one geographical identity.
Makers Yet To Clarify
The filmmakers have not revealed the complete storyline or explained whether the poster's wording reflects the film's narrative or is simply a symbolic creative choice. As a result, the debate continues online, with both sides presenting different interpretations of mythology and cultural heritage.
