Despite being fictional, the film has caused a significant controversy due to alleged connections to the life of renowned Tamil actor and musician M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar (MKT), prompting concerns about defamation, artistic freedom, and filmmakers' obligations.
M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar's grandson, B. Thiagarajan, has filed a lawsuit in a Chennai court, requesting an indefinite stay against the movie's distribution, streaming, and theatrical release. He claims that by depicting his grandfather as a guy with "loose morals" who died blind, destitute, and despised, Kaantha defames him.
