Kantara Chapter 1 hit the theatres on October 2, 2025. The film stars Rishab Shetty in lead role. Upon its release, Chapter 1 received immense praise from fans and critics alike. Though the film has slowed down at the box office, it has achieved a major milestone. Kantara Chapter 1 has crossed the impressive mark of Rs 500 crore at the domestic box office.

According to Sacnilk, the film has maintained a solid grip on the box office well into its third week. On day 15, it brought in Rs 8.85 crore, followed by Rs 8.5 crore on its third Friday (day 16), and Rs 7.24 crore on its third Saturday. With these consistent earnings, Rishab Shetty’s film has now crossed Rs 500.99 crore in net collections across India.

About the movie: Kantara: Chapter 1 is one of Hombale Films’ most ambitious undertakings. The creative team includes music director B. Ajaneesh Loknath, cinematographer Arvind Kashyap, and production designer Vinesh Banglan, all of whom have shaped the film’s powerful visual and emotional narrative. The film released worldwide on October 2 in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali and English, reaching audiences across languages and regions while remaining deeply rooted in its cultural core.

Set against the backdrop of pre-colonial coastal Karnataka, the film delves into the ancient origins of the Buta Kola ritual, expanding on the rich lore and historical context introduced in the first installment, which was released in 2022. Much like its predecessor, the prequel masterfully intertwines regional folklore, spirituality, and action, continuing its exploration of the complex bond between humans, nature and the divine.

However, the film has not been without criticism. Some viewers took issue with its thematic approach, particularly its handling of land ownership. A key moment in the narrative, where a character claims to donate land, sparked debate, with critics pointing out that the film failed to address a fundamental question: “In the first place, who gave you the ownership?”
