Hera Pheri (2000) remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic cult classics. Directed by Priyadarshan and starring Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and Paresh Rawal, the comedy about three desperate men caught in a ransom call gone wrong has entertained audiences for over two decades through memes, dialogues and countless TV reruns. With talks of Hera Pheri 3 creating fresh buzz online, director Priyadarshan, in a chat with Pinkvilla, addressed the possibility of returning to the franchise. He clarified, however, that he would only take it up if the story matched the charm and legacy of the original.
Priyadarshan said, "I cannot tell if I am doing the third part, unless and until I can crack a film which has to do justice to the first installment. The first part was born, but the third one shouldn’t let it die. If I am doing the film, I have to make sure that it is tolerable for people who watched the first part."
"Unless and until I crack the full film, I will never attempt part three. If a good script doesn’t turn out to my conviction, I will not do the film. I have climbed certain heights in my career from where I don’t want to fall badly," he further added.
Hera Pheri 3 had been embroiled in controversy after Paresh Rawal's sudden exit, which led to a fallout with co-star Akshay Kumar. However, contrary to reports of his return, Rawal maintained that his decision to step away from the project is final "for now". The veteran actor initially cited not feeling connected to the project as the reason for his exit.
However, Rawal has rejoined the cast of Hera Pheri 3 as Baburao, thanks to the efforts of Sajid Nadiadwala and Akshay Kumar, who helped reconcile the team. Priyadarshan is set to direct the film, which will also star Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty, reuniting the iconic trio. The film's production is moving forward, with the cast and crew fine-tuning their creative vision.
