Ronit Roy is one of the most admired and reputed actors of the Indian television industry. He has given many iconic roles, be it in the form of a supporting actor or the main lead, he has always managed to capture the spotlight. But this was not the case from the start; Ronit has worked hard over the years to overcome his poverty and the period of intense struggle. Recently, the actor talked about his old days before making his debut with Deepak Balraj Vij’s film Jaan Tere Naam in 1992.

Ronit Roy recently appeared on the Hindi Rush podcast and admitted that he was a closed-off person and hence, felt left out of several conversations and opportunities. “I honestly don’t know why my career didn’t take off in the early days. I used to think about it a lot before, but now I don’t. I stay in my own zone, and I think a lot of it also happened because I stopped going to people for work, and hence, they stopped giving me opportunities,” he expressed.

Ronit Roy also shed light on his struggling days when he didn’t even have the money to buy a one-time meal and had to skip eating the entire day. On being asked about whether all of this was worth it for him, he recalled an emotional incident, which is still etched in his heart.

The Udaan actor explained, “Near Bandra station, there is a very famous dhaba, and every day I used to eat there. I only had one meal, because that is all I could afford, and I used to alternate between kaali daal 2 roti and palak paneer 2 roti. One day, I just asked them for some roti and onions because I was out of money. He gave me 2 rotis and some daal. I told him that I hadn’t asked for the daal, and he said, ‘Koi baat nahi meri taraf se, aaj aapka daal ka din hai (It’s on me, because you always eat daal on this day).'”

He even pointed out that after entering into the filmy world, he still used to spend money with caution. “I earned 50,000 for my first movie, and they paid it to me in instalments of 4,ooo every month. Back then, that was a huge amount for me. But even after the debut, all the films I did helped me barely manage my expenses. The money never came; it was all still hand to mouth,” he said.

On the work front, Ronit Roy was recently spotted alongside Kajol in the horror-mythological drama Maa. He can also be seen in his OTT show called Chakravarti Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan, which streams on Sony Liv.
