After three decades of the 1993 Mumbai blasts, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam revisited the case and talked about how Sanjay Dutt was related to it. Nikam said that he does not believe that the actor didn’t had any connection with the blasts. Dutt was arrested under the Arms Act after facing allegations of possessing an AK-56 rifle at his residence. The prosecutor stated that he received a temp full of weapons and the actor then had a craze about weapons, which is the reason behind keeping the AK-56 rifle.

In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel, Ujjwal Nikam said, “Personally, I believe that he was crazy about weapons. And that’s why he had one AK-56 rifle. But before the blasts, Abu Salem brought one tempo full of weapons and Sanjay saw it and he kept one rifle for himself and returned the rest. He was also imprisoned for 7 years under the Arms Act.”

When asked if Sanjay Dutt was aware of the conspiracy behind the 1993 bombings, Ujjwal Nikam added, “I don’t think so.” The prosecutor said, “When they came to him with a tempo full of weapons… If he had informed the police about it, then the police would have followed it up. They would have apprehended the accused. That’s why I said it. Sanjay didn’t know that the blast was going to happen but even if he had informed that these many weapons came in, and they had RDX, hand grenades, then the police would have investigated and stopped the blasts.”

“When the court punished him under the Arms Act, his lawyer said that it was his first offence and he should be given some benefit for that. I opposed that. Because before this, Sanjay had purchased one 9mm pistol from Dawood Ibrahim’s right hand man. And I said that since he bought an unlicensed weapon from a criminal, he can’t get that benefit and the court rejected it,” Ujjwal added.

He also believed that Sanjay Dutt had a fascination with arms but was not directly involved in the blasts. Ujjwal Nikam said, “I believe that Sanjay was crazy about weapons and arms. He wasn’t directly involved in the bomb blasts.”
