Shaad Randhawa, known for his nuanced performances in films like Aashiqui 2 and Saiyaara, recently starred in Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, a romantic drama that has stirred debate online. Directed by Milap Zaveri, the film explores the darker side of love and obsession through a turbulent relationship that many viewers have labelled ‘Toxic.’ Despite the controversy, the film continues to attract attention for its bold portrayal of flawed love, raising questions about how cinema mirrors complex human emotions. In an exclusive conversation with The Daily Jagran, Shaad Randhawa shared his thoughts on the criticism surrounding the film.
Shaad shared, “At the end of the day, it is entertainment, it is cinema. When you have a title like Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, you know it’s about intensity and madness in love. Every film will have people with differing opinions and that’s absolutely fine. As long as the creative team understands what story they are telling and who they are telling it to, that’s what matters.” Addressing the online debate that labelled the film “problematic,” Randhawa said, “Some films might border on what people would call toxic, just like adult comedies can be called cringe. But as actors, our job is to entertain. If our intentions are pure and we perform sincerely, that’s what counts.”

Shaad Randhawa also reflected on his long career and how he navigates perceptions about being cast in secondary roles. “I don’t believe in labels like ‘lead’ or ‘supporting actor,’” he said. “Cinema is teamwork just like cricket. You might not always open the innings, but if you’re given one over, you should bowl it well. What matters is doing your part with honesty.” Quoting filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, Shaad added, “I don’t know about being a good or bad actor, but I always try to be an honest one.” When asked if Bollywood tends to typecast him, Randhawa brushed off the notion. “I’m a positive person. I’m grateful for every role that comes my way. Whether it’s a film, television, OTT, or theatre I just want to keep working. Every platform has its own creative process, but the job of an actor remains the same to perform truthfully.”
