Actor Suniel Shetty has approached the Bombay High Court seeking protection of his personality rights. In his plea, he stated that numerous social media pages and websites have been using his photographs and likeness to promote their businesses without his consent or any form of authorisation. Shetty, in an interim application before the Bombay High Court, has requested that all websites using his photographs without permission be directed to remove them immediately and be restrained from any future use. The matter was briefly heard on Friday by a bench led by Justice Arif Doctor, after which the court reserved its order.
During the hearing, Shetty’s counsel, senior advocate Birendra Saraf, highlighted that several websites had posted fake images of the actor along with his grandchild, Evaraah. The plea further alleged that the actor’s photographs were being exploited for commercial purposes without his authorisation.
The lawyer further informed the court that numerous fake social media accounts have been created in Suniel Shetty’s name, with several impostors posing as his agents to solicit brand endorsements. He pointed out that, in some instances, even after platforms identified the content as fake, they failed to remove it. Responding to these concerns, Justice Arif Doctor commented on the growing dangers of artificial intelligence and social media, stating, "This AI and social media… if not regulated, it’s scary what people can do with it." The petition also seeks a John Doe order to prevent unidentified individuals or entities from misusing Shetty’s name and images in the future.
Birendra Saraf said, "There are deepfake photographs and videos circulating, some showing him with his grandchild. Real estate and astrology websites are using his image. A gambling website has also featured him. None of this is with his permission."
