Thug Life created a lot of enthusiasm and hype among fans soon after the trailer was dropped. The makers faced internet's wrath after actresses Abhirami and Trisha Krishnan, who are 28 years younger than Kamal Haasan, were seen romancing him in the Tamil movie's trailer. Speaking out about the criticism, Mani Ratnam states that this is a 'fact of life.'

Mani Ratnam thinks that even while people criticise relationships between men and women based on their age difference on screen, this actually occurs frequently in real life. For the unversed, Thug Life featured 70-year-old Kamal kissing 41-year-old Abhirami and making love to 42-year-old Trisha. Social media users reacted negatively to the scenes.

Mani Ratnam said, "In real life, there are people, slightly older, who have a relationship with a younger person, male or female. There are. It is a fact of life. It's been like that for a long time. It's not just now. When it's in cinema, we try to find fault with it or pass judgment on it, which means you are trying to cover or close your eyes to what is happening in your society and claim that it should be only this way," while speaking to Mid-Day.

Mani Ratnam continued by saying that the scene should be seen in light of the two characters' relationship. "It is (about) how these two people meet. It is not Trisha Krishnan and Kamal Haasan. It is (about) their respective characters. So that is what it should be. And if you see the film, the relationship, how it formed and whether it is real or not, then you can make a judgment, not based on Trisha Krishnan and Kamal Haasan," he added.

Mani Ratnam went on to say that the audience should concentrate on the movie's two characters rather than Trisha and Kamal, who are portraying the characters. "It is about how these two people meet. It is not Trisha Krishnan and Kamal Haasan. It is about their respective characters. So that is what it should be. And if you see the film, the relationship, how it formed and whether it is real or not, then you can make a judgment, not based on Trisha Krishnan and Kamal Haasan," he concluded his thoughts.
