When Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon’s Off-Screen Cold War Made Andaz Apna Apna Sets Tense Yet Iconic | Throwback Tales

Andaz Apna Apna is one of Bollywood’s most beloved comedies. But behind its laughs, there were whispers of off-screen tension between its female stars, Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon. Over the years, many stories have emerged saying the two were barely speaking on set. Let’s revisit what really happened, how it was later explained, and how the women view those rumours today.

The tales began in the 1990s when gossip magazines and film insiders claimed Karisma and Raveena had a ‘cold war’ throughout the filming of Andaz Apna Apna. They allegedly refused to exchange words, avoided each other during scenes, and general “ego issues” were said to have been at the heart of the rift. In the climactic scene of the film, their characters are tied together to a pillar. Director Rajkumar Santoshi reportedly insisted they resolve whatever was between them before shooting that scene. This reconciliation was said to be forced by the team so the shoot could proceed smoothly. 

Another infamous story added a more physical flavour. Choreographer Farah Khan once shared on Koffee With Karan that during the filming of another film, Aatish: Feel the Fire (1994), Karisma and Raveena got into a teenager-like spat. According to her, they were hitting each other with wigs, stepping on heels, being dramatic. Some versions of the story also claimed tension carried over to Andaz Apna Apna.

As time went on, both actresses addressed the rumours. Raveena clarified that though there was some “classroom politics”, youthful ego, and misunderstandings, there was never a proper “catfight” with physical violence. She has said that these stories were exaggerated by media craving drama, and that much of what was reported was hyped up. Today, they reportedly have made peace. Their children attend the same school, they bump into each other at gatherings, and the tension has long since cooled.
