Udhayanidhi Stalin Remarks On Trisha: DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition, Udhayanidhi Stalin, was arrested on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from his Chennai residence following a massive political row. The arrest stems from an alleged "double-meaning" remark he made involving actor Trisha Krishnan during a public rally.

What Did Udhayanidhi Stalin Say?

The incident occurred during a DMK protest rally in Thanjavur regarding the Cauvery water dispute and Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu project. Addressing the crowd, Udhayanidhi criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay over the state's water crisis, stating: “Water should have come. But today, not even a single drop of water has come.”

As he paused his speech, members of the crowd began chanting "Trisha! Trisha!" referring to long-standing media rumours linking the actor with CM Vijay.

Responding to the chants with a smirk, Udhayanidhi made a remark in Tamil that roughly translates to, “Wherever water comes, whether it comes or not, water should come there”. Though he immediately followed up by stating he was strictly talking about Cauvery river water, critics and political rivals accused him of delivering a deliberate double entendre aimed at the actor.

Why Did Udhayanidhi Stalin Statement Trigger Political Backlash?

The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), alongside the BJP and Congress, strongly condemned the statement:

  • NCW and Police Complaints: The TVK filed an official police complaint and approached the National Commission for Women (NCW), alleging that the comment amounted to verbal harassment, objectification, and insulting the modesty of a woman in a public space.

  • BJP Reaction: BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy labelled the statement as "disgusting, obscene, vulgar and shameful," demanding immediate legal action.

  • DMK Defence: DMK leaders rejected the allegations, claiming Udhayanidhi never mentioned Trisha by name and that his speech focused purely on the Cauvery water dispute and CM Vijay's policy failures.

    • Udhayanidhi Stalin Arrest

    Following police complaints and widespread political protests by TVK and BJP cadres, Tamil Nadu Police arrested Udhayanidhi Stalin on Tuesday morning under several sections, including provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

    Following his arrest, Udhayanidhi referred to the case as political vendetta and a "joke," stating he would fight the charges legally. The Madras High Court subsequently took up his anticipatory bail plea. As of now, actor Trisha Krishnan has not issued a public statement regarding the incident.
