Satluj Plot And Inspiration
Satluj explores a sensitive and controversial chapter of Punjab's history. It is a true-event-inspired drama based on the life and ultimate sacrifice of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, played by Diljit Dosanjh.
Jaswant Singh Khalra was an ordinary bank manager who turned into a fierce human rights crusader during the militancy era in Punjab. He conducted a thorough investigation into the mass illegal cremations of thousands of unidentified bodies by the Punjab Police between 1984 and 1994.
In 1995, Khalra mysteriously disappeared. A decade later, in 2005, four police officers were arrested and convicted for his abduction and murder. Their initial seven-year sentences were later extended to life imprisonment by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2007.
Speaking about his decision to take on the role, Diljit Dosanjh shared, "Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra ji's martyrdom and his contribution to humanity were the primary reasons I chose to be a part of this film. When I first heard the script, it moved me deeply, as it is rooted in the lived experiences, struggles, and sacrifices of real people."

Why Was Satluj Movie Delayed?
Satluj movie's journey to the screen has been plagued by a rigorous three-year battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) due to its politically charged themes.
- The film has undergone three title changes. It was originally named Ghalughara (after the historic massacre), before being changed to Panjab '95, and finally releasing as Satluj.
- When first submitted, the CBFC demanded around 120 cuts, objecting to references to Punjab and the specific identity of the protagonist. While the apex Sikh religious body, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), intervened to help ease some cuts, the title modifications remained mandatory.
- The controversy followed the film internationally. In 2023, the movie was abruptly pulled from the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) lineup just one day before its world premiere, with sources citing political forces at play due to Canada's large Sikh population.
Despite the long series of theatrical postponements, including a cancelled release in February last year, Satluj is finally available to global audiences.
