Janhvi Kapoor recently weighed in on the controversy surrounding the release of Pushpa 2: The Rule and the postponed re-release of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar in India. The IMAX screens in the country were reportedly booked entirely for Sukumar's Allu Arjun-starrer, leading to disappointment among Nolan fans.
Janhvi took to Instagram to defend Pushpa 2, questioning the tendency to favour Western cinema over Indian films. She responded to an article by Tatva India titled, ‘India doesn’t deserve cinema,’ saying fans as Interstellar won’t be released in India, Pushpa 2 gets all IMAX.
In her comment, Janhvi wrote, “Pushpa 2 is also cinema. Why are we so obsessed with idolizing the West and running down things that come out of our own country, instantly disqualifying them as unworthy?” The actor further highlighted how other countries celebrate India’s rooted, larger-than-life narratives while Indians often feel embarrassed by them. “The same rooted representation and larger-than-life tone that other countries appreciate and are fascinated by in our cinema is what we, ourselves, look down upon. Sad,” she added.

Janhvi's comment sparked a debate online. Some supported her view, with one user commenting, “People who watch Western films behave like they’re in an upper class compared to those who watch Indian movies.” However, others disagreed, with one person stating, “If the visuals of Pushpa 2 are anything to go by, then this is cinema we ought to be embarrassed of. Please don’t see this as East vs. West; you’re smarter than that.”
