Veteran actor Shabana Azmi recently shared a glimpse into her successful marriage with lyricist Javed Akhtar, revealing a surprising secret. According to Shabana, one of the reasons their marriage of almost 40 years has endured is that they "don’t meet too often."
Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar, both renowned figures in the Indian film industry, got married in December 1984, after Javed's previous marriage to screenwriter Honey Irani ended in divorce.
Speaking to ETimes, Shabana explained, "He (Javed Akhtar) says the success of our marriage is that we don’t meet too often, we are both busy running in different directions." Despite their busy schedules, Shabana emphasized the strength and happiness in their relationship. She noted their similar backgrounds, with both their fathers being poets from Uttar Pradesh and having communist leanings, which has helped them connect on a deeper level.
Shabana also highlighted their deep friendship, a cornerstone of their relationship, stating, "Touchwood we have a happy and strong relationship. He (Javed) says ‘Shabana is my best friend and even marriage could not change that'.”

Javed Akhtar has also previously shared insights into their marriage. In a 2023 interview with actor Arbaaz Khan, he discussed the challenges of living with an independent, strong-minded woman. Javed emphasized the importance of recognizing equality in a relationship, stating, "Living with an independent strong-minded woman is not a bed of roses. Kahin aap ko push bhi karna padega, magar push aap equal ko kar rahe hain (Sometimes you have to push her, but you should always remember that she is your equal)."

Javed Akhtar's first marriage to Honey Irani resulted in two children, filmmaker Zoya Akhtar and actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar. Despite the end of his first marriage, Javed found enduring love and companionship with Shabana Azmi, a bond that has lasted for almost four decades.
