Renowned filmmaker and actor Ananth Mahadevan, who is known for his work in Aksar 2, The Storyteller, recently took a dig at the wins of Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies. At IIFA 2025, the film won several awards at the different categories. The filmmaker raised concerns about the striking resemblance of Laapataa Ladies to his 1999 movie Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol. Mahadevan didn’t mention the name of Laapataa Ladies but it was quite evident that he was talking about the movie as he earlier pointed out the similarities of both films.
While sharing the poster of Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol, Ananth Mahadevan wrote on Facebook “GHUNGHAT KE PAT KHOL just made a clean sweep of something called IIFA awards.. including BEST ORIGINAL STORY!! Of course with another title.. but then a rose is a rose by any name!”

When a user commented on the post, “This comes really a shocker when you see the original is not acknowledged anywhere .. sad part!” He also posted a YouTube video link of the accidental bride swapping which took place at the railway station. Mahadevan shared the link with a comment which read, “Only 1 hour available.” A fan alleged, “Shame on A K Production... They have also pulled GHUNGHAT KE PAT KHOL from YouTube channel.” Another user said, “Sir sarcasm at it's best.”
Last year, Ananth Mahadevan told Mid Day “It seems too much of a coincidence. I have seen Laapataa Ladies, and the beginning as well as many incidents are the same.”
Coming back to Laapataa Ladies, the movie features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Ravi Kishan, Satendra Soni, Chhaya Kadam, Durgesh Kumar and Geeta Agrawal Sharma in key roles. The movie was produced by Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande. The comedy drama released in theatres on March 1, 2024. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
