To tackle significant traffic congestion in Gurugram, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has prepared a plan to construct an underpass at Millennium City Centre Metro Chowk. A proposal for the project, estimated to cost Rs80 crore, will be presented for approval at the GMDA board meeting on November 10.

Why Is The Underpass Needed?

This junction, located between Sectors 27, 29, 43, and 44, connects major routes in the city. It experiences heavy traffic jams daily due to the presence of the Metro station, Rapid Metro station, Galleria Market, and the Sector-29 restaurant hub.

A survey indicates that approximately 9,200 vehicles (Passenger Car Units) pass through this junction during peak hours.

The problem is expected to worsen as another metro station is set to be built at this junction, which will likely increase both traffic and pedestrian pressure.

The GMDA's Comprehensive Mobility Management Plan (CMMP) previously noted that traffic on nearly half of the city's roads moves at less than 30 kilometres per hour. The same report identified Millennium City Centre Metro Chowk as a priority location where a grade separation (like an underpass or flyover) was necessary to reduce delays at traffic signals.

A GMDA official stated that the proposal for the underpass is ready and will be presented for administrative approval at the meeting. Once approved, a detailed report for the project will be prepared.

Project Benefits And Timeline

The proposed underpass is expected to be completed within 24 months of work commencing.

It will provide relief to vehicles traveling towards IFFCO Chowk, Golf Course Road Extension, Faridabad, NH-48, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. It will also improve local traffic flow in the surrounding sectors and provide better connectivity to the Metro and Rapid Metro networks.

This project is part of a broader GMDA strategy to ease congestion. Underpasses or flyovers have already been constructed at Atul Kataria Chowk, Mahavir Chowk, and Basai Chowk. A new grade separator is also proposed at Bakhtawar Chowk, with plans for flyovers at Ambedkar Chowk (Sectors 45,46,51,52) and Dadi Sati Chowk (Sectors 85,86,89,90).

Resident Skepticism

Deepak Verma, president of the Sushant Lok 1 Resident Welfare Association (RWA), said that while this is one of the busiest junctions in the city, the plan's real success will depend on its implementation.

Verma noted that a flyover was previously built at this location, but "it ends at the traffic signal and has not made much of a difference." He believes that if the underpass is constructed properly this time, it will certainly provide significant relief to commuters, especially with another metro station also being built at the location.
