Jagran Bureau, Ahmedabad: Over 500 people fell ill after drinking contaminated water in Gujarat's Gota Ward (North-West Zone) of the Ghatlodia Assembly constituency in recent days, prompting a door-to-door survey in the city. The state health department has constituted 40 teams for the survey and to carry out disease prevention measures on a war footing.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel spoke with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Mayor Hitesh Kantilal Barot and took stock of the situation. To provide immediate relief to the citizens, the AMC has undertaken the cleaning of underground water tanks and is supplying clean drinking water to the housing societies via tankers.
The contamination was reported at Akanksha Apartments in Ahmedabad's Gita ward. Residents alleged that the contamination of the Narmada drinking water supply with sewage water is causing diarrhoea, vomiting, and various gastrointestinal ailments among the people.
Residents allege negligence despite repeated complaints
Despite repeated complaints, no action has been taken thus far, they alleged. In particular, over the last three days, members of several families have fallen ill one after another, sparking widespread concern throughout the locality.
Residents have demanded punitive action against the officials responsible for negligence. Meanwhile, recognising the gravity of the situation, a delegation comprising the Ahmedabad Mayor and the Corporation's medical team visited Akanksha Apartments.
Actions taken so far
The medical team collected water samples for analysis, while the Mayor assessed the ground reality and issued necessary directives to the concerned departments.
The AMC is also taking steps to repair the damaged pipelines and bring the outbreak under control. A team from the Health Department has conducted a door-to-door survey in all the residential societies where cases of diarrhoea and vomiting have been reported, and has also distributed chlorine tablets.
Technical Supervisors, Assistant Engineers, and Assistant City Engineers have inspected the condition of all underground water tanks located across the various societies. Where necessary, societies have been instructed to have their underground tanks cleaned by the AMC, and arrangements have also been made to supply clean drinking water to these societies via tankers.
