IndiGo Meltdown: Amid an ongoing IndiGo crisis, Air India on Monday announced that it has commenced the rollout of the new fare to help the stranded passengers. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the airline informed that while Air India Express has already completed the implementation, Air India will also complete it in a few hours. The decision was taken after the Ministry of Civil Aviation on December 6 directed the airlines to monitor their fare prices. The directions from the centre came amid reports of airlines increasing their fare prices after hundreds of IndiGo flights got cancelled in the past few days.
The airline stated that a phased rollout was required to ensure accuracy, as the whole process involved third-party system dependencies. "In compliance with the Ministry of Civil Aviation's (MoCA) directive issued on the evening of 6 December regarding the capping of Economy Class base fares, Air India Group commenced the rollout of the new prescribed fares across its reservation systems immediately. Air India Express completed the implementation across its systems, while Air India continues to progressively apply the fare caps, which will be fully effective in the next few hours," Air India said in its statement.
The airline also announced that the passengers who booked the ticket during the transition phase will also get the refunds. "Guests who may have booked Air India flights in Economy Class during the transition period, at base fares above the prescribed caps, are entitled to refunds of the differential amounts," the airline added. Earlier on Saturday, the Civil Aviation Ministry directed the airlines to "maintain the pricing discipline".
“These caps will remain in force until the situation fully stabilises. The objective of this directive is to maintain pricing discipline in the market, prevent any exploitation of passengers in distress, and ensure that citizens who urgently need to travel — including senior citizens, students, and patients — are not subjected to financial hardship during this period,” the ministry said.
