The Punjab Police asserted that radical Sikh preacher and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh pose a big threat to the life of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, as well as to the state's law and order situation. This claim has been made in an affidavit submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, The Times of India reported.
The police have cited several videos of the separatist leader which were recorded outside Ajnala police station in Amritsar. In these clips, Singh can allegedly be heard stating that the chief minister's actions could lead to him facing the same fate as former chief minister Beant Singh.
Notably, former Punjab CM Beant Singh was assassinated in a bomb blast at the secretariat complex in Chandigarh. Probe agencies confirmed the attack was orchestrated by Khalistan Commando Force.
“We warned CM Mann to not walk on the path of CM Beant Singh… CM Mann is still proceeding on the path earlier tread by him. Dilawar acted as a human bomb and blew up CM Beant Singh… CM Mann has ensured that several such Dilawar's have taken birth out of this present crowd today,” Amritpal Singh could be heard saying in the purported video.
The police expressed concern that such statements could mislead young people into thinking that assassinating a democratically elected chief minister was an act of heroism. They further stated that they have valid concerns that Amritpal Singh and his associates may carry out serious illegal acts against those who oppose their extremist views.
"If he was to take law into his own hands and go about harming everyone who may not agree with his ideology, as he has done in recent past a serious and adverse situation of law and order, maintenance of public order and security of the state was most likely to arise in the area/state," the police said in the detailed affidavit.
Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in Assam jail. He surrendered before the police on March 29, 2023, at a gurdwara in Moga’s Rode village after 18 days of manhunt. Amritpal and four of his associates were charged under the National Security Act (NSA). Singh was wanted for attempted murder, obstruction of law enforcement and creating disharmony in society.
