Assam Exit Poll: The exit polls have predicted that the BJP is set to retain its power in Assam under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma. As per most of the pollsters, the incumbent party could get around 90 of the total 126 seats, leading to a comfortable victory. The major opposition party, Congress, is likely to win around 30 seats, far behind the majority mark. As per the pollsters, Sarma's popularity is one of the key reasons behind the historic comeback of the BJP in the northeastern state.

As per the data shared by CNN News18 Vote Vibe, when being asked about preferred chief minister, 51 per cent of Assamese opted for Sarma. Around 37 per cent of the voters chose Congress' leading face, Gaurav Gogoi, far less than his rival. The pollsters also suggested that while Muslims voted for Congress on a large scale, the saffron party performed well across the sections of Hindus.

Key Factors Favouring BJP

Himanta Sarma, throughout his campaign, raised the issue of illegal immigration and assured that strong action will be taken against the infiltration, possibly sending a positive message to the locals. As per CNN-News18, around 17 per cent of people voted on illegal immigration. While Congress raised the issue of corruption and joblessness, the ruling party successfully managed to counter those issues.

The chief minister has emerged as someone with strong administrative skills and quick decision-making, giving him a clear edge over his rival candidate. Apart from this, several beneficiary schemes, especially for the tribal and marginalised groups, have also possibly benefitted the BJP.

Himanta Sarma's "no compromise" stance on issues like infiltration has possibly benefited the saffron party by uniting the Hindu votes. He has also projected himself as the troubleshooter for the BJP across the Northeast, giving a further boost. The results of the Assam assembly election will be declared on May 4.
