In an unexpected turn of events on Wednesday, chaos ensued at Burhwal railway station in Barabanki, UP, when two trains were left stranded for hours by the loco-pilots, leaving more than 2,500 passengers frustrated and angry.

The first incident involved the Saharsa-New Delhi Express (Train number 02553), which reached Burhwal railway station around 1 pm. The loco-pilot of the train complained of uneasiness and decided to stop the train to have a few hours rest, leaving passengers clueless about the prolonged halt. Upon inquiry, passengers were left stunned when they came to know that the loco-pilot was sleeping at the station.

In another similar incident, the Barauni Express, already delayed by over five and a half hours, arrived at Burhwal junction at 4:04 pm, only to witness the same fate as the train staff deboarded the engine saying that their duty had ended, leaving more than a 1,000 passengers stranded.

Upon learning about the unavailability of loco pilots, Passengers requested an alternative driver but the station master refused to pay heed to their requests. After a few hours, frustrated by the lack of information, thousands of passengers started protesting at the station. They also blocked one more express train which was supposed to pass the station. Railway police were called to control the increasingly worsening situation as Railway officials tried to find solutions for this unexpected problem.

The situation could only be controlled hours late after North-Eastern Railways dispatched additional staff from Gonda station to resume the journey.

"Our journey was supposed to end in a maximum of 25 hours 20 minutes, but it's the third day on this so-called 'special train'. This is a special torture created by Indian railways for poor passengers like us. There is no water, no pantry car to buy food and no power supply. Both the loco-pilots and train guard have alighted from the train citing drowsiness," said a passenger as quoted by Times of India.
