State Bureau, Kolkata: In a distressing incident, the body of a minor girl was found in a pond near Baruipur, in the South 24 Parganas district of Bengal on Sunday. Family members alleged that the girl was raped and murdered, and her body was thrown into the pond.
The 12-year-old girl had left home on Saturday evening to buy food items but did not return. Family members allege that four men had forcibly taken her. On Sunday morning, her body was recovered from a pond near her house. After the body was found, local residents started protesting on the road and at Suryapur station.
The incident took place in Suryapur Haat in the Dhapdhapi-2 Panchayat area under the Baruipur Police Station.
During this, a young man also died due to beating by the mob. Some locals claimed he was seen with suspects in the case. According to police, protesters pelted stones, injuring some policemen. Police resorted to lathi-charge to control the situation. Police have also launched an investigation into the incident.
Rail Lines Blocked Amid Protests
In protest against the incident, local residents blocked roads and railway tracks. During the unrest, a youth died after being beaten by the crowd. Rail services on the Sealdah–Namkhana route were disrupted for about an hour, while the road blockade continued for nearly five hours. As the situation worsened, a large police force was deployed.
Protesters burnt tyres on the Baruipur-Joynagar Road and also damaged a few police vehicles.

Chief Minister Speaks to Victim's Father Over Phone
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke to the victim's father over the phone and assured him of strict action against the culprits. He has called the victim's family to Bhavani Bhawan on Tuesday.
Urging the protesters to lift the road blockade, Inspector General of Police, Presidency Range, Kankarprasad Barui, announced that everyone associated with the crime will be arrested and receive maximum punishment following trial.
"Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari called me up and said action will be taken against all the culprits, and they will be punished," the officer said.
Barui said he will meet the deceased girl's parents on Tuesday, promising them all assistance.
Stating that police raids are ongoing to nab the culprits, the IGP said, "No one will be spared."
He added that arrangements are being made to conduct the post-mortem soon and, if necessary, the entire process will be videographed. He assured that, along with ensuring the arrest of all the accused, efforts will be made to secure the harshest possible punishment for them.
