Bengal Weather: Heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms are expected to occur in North Bengal till Thursday, May 22. Kalbaisakhi-like conditions with gusty winds are likely to develop. As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), no major change in temperature is likely in the next four to five days in Bengal. An east-west trough runs from Punjab to north Bangladesh across Haryana, south Uttar Pradesh, south Bihar and north Gangetic West Bengal at 1.5 km above mean sea level. In presence of favourable wind pattern and moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal, enhanced thunderstorms with gusty winds accompanied with heavy rainfall activity is likely over some districts of West Bengal, the weather body added.

Over the past 24 hours, gusty winds occurred at one or two places West Burdwan, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas and Purulia
districts of South Bengal and Malda district of North Bengal with maximum wind speed between 30-48 kmph. Heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at one or two places over North Dinajpur district of North Bengal.

May 20: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30- 40 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, Murshidabad, Nadia and West Burdwan districts of South Bengal.

May 21: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts of South Bengal.

May 22: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30- 40 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over all the districts of South Bengal.

North Bengal Alerts

May 20: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 50-60 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur districts with heavy (07-11 cm) rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over North Dinajpur district of North Bengal .

Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning and heavy to very heavy (07-20 cm) rainfall are likely to occur at one or two places over Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts of North Bengal.

Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rain likely to occur at one or two places over the rest districts with heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Coochbehar, Alipurduar and Kalimpong districts of North Bengal.

May 21: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rain likely to occur at one or two places over all the districts with heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over North Dinajpur and Coochbehar districts of North Bengal.

May 22: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rain likely to occur at one or two places over all the districts of North Bengal with heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Cooch Behar district of North Bengal.
