Bengaluru News: Bengaluru has achieved another first in smart mobility by introducing live traffic signal countdowns on the Mappls app, making it the first city in India to display real-time signal timings directly on a navigation platform. The feature aims to make commuting smoother, allowing drivers to anticipate signal changes and plan their movements efficiently.

According to MapmyIndia Director Rohan Verma, the update will enhance the driving experience by integrating live signal data with the Mappls navigation interface. “Can you see the live traffic signal timings showing up on Mappls app? As the real traffic signal counts down, you see the same on the map inside the Mappls app. Magical, and helpful,” Verma wrote on X, adding that the feature is now live in Bengaluru.

Verma also credited the collaboration between the Bengaluru City Traffic Police, Arcadis India and the Mappls tech team for making the project possible. “This is an India-first initiative,” he said, expressing pride in the app’s innovation. He described Mappls as India’s own swadeshi mapping and navigation platform designed to make travel safer and more convenient.

How Mappls App Works

The new Mappls app provides commuters with live countdowns of traffic signals, showing exactly how many seconds remain before a signal turns red or green. This real-time visibility helps drivers manage their speed and make better route decisions, ultimately easing traffic congestion at busy intersections.

The feature reflects Bengaluru’s ongoing efforts to integrate advanced technology into its urban transport systems. It aligns with the city’s broader goal of improving traffic management through digital innovation.

Mappls App Public Response And Expansion Plans

Verma’s announcement quickly gained attention online, with users praising the feature’s usefulness and asking if it would be extended to other cities. Responding to queries, Verma said Mappls is ready to expand the feature nationwide and is waiting for local traffic authorities across India to collaborate.

Meanwhile, some users took the opportunity to suggest future updates, such as a “pothole tracker” that could help drivers choose routes with smoother roads.
