Bengaluru: The first phase of the long-delayed additional ramp at the Hebbal flyover is expected to open to motorists by early August, providing partial relief to commuters dealing with heavy congestion at one of the city's busiest junctions.

The new ramp, being built by the BDA, begins near Baptist Hospital and is being integrated with the existing KR Pura loop to enable smoother traffic flow toward Mehkri Circle.

About Hebbal flyover Ramp

Once operational, the ramp is expected to ease traffic flow from the Nagawara side. The structure spans around 700 metres, supported by 26 pillars and consisting of 25 spans. A total of 99 girders have been installed, including those positioned over the active railway line at the junction. To construct a four-lane section above the operational track, the BDA recently installed 33.5-metre-long girders, necessitating traffic diversions for vehicles traveling from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) toward Mehkri Circle.

A senior BDA official confirmed that the first phase of construction is in its final stages. "All structural work has been completed. Deck casting and road laying from Baptist Hospital side up to the railway track is done. The remaining stretch up to KR Pura loop should be completed by the end of July or first week of Aug," the official said, according to TOI report.

Hebbal flyover Ramp Detail

Originally planned to stretch from Baptist Hospital to Esteem Mall, the ramp was intended to provide a dedicated corridor for airport-bound traffic. However, the plan was scaled down due to repeated delays and concerns over traffic disruptions during construction. In the second phase, the ramp will be connected to the Tumakuru Road loop, which currently serves vehicles from the service road near Esteem Mall and Tumakuru Road (ORR side) heading toward Mehkri Circle.

Hebbal Flyover Ramp First Proposal

First proposed in 2015-16, the project faced multiple interruptions. Construction initially began in 2018-19 but was halted after BMRCL raised objections to the road’s alignment, citing conflicts with planned Metro expansions. By that time, the BDA had already spent Rs 25 crore. Work resumed two years later with a redesigned plan, introducing significant changes such as the integration of the KR Pura loop, an element not included in the original blueprint.

To accommodate the revised design, the BDA partially demolished the KR Pura loop last year. Earlier plans to demolish the Tumakuru Road loop and construct a new road through the adjacent tree park were abandoned. Instead, both loops are being retained and integrated with the new ramp as part of the updated plan.

While the original goal was to streamline traffic from the KIA side, changes to the plan mean that vehicles on the national highway’s main carriageway will not directly benefit from the new infrastructure.

Hebbal Flyover Junction

Separately, the BDA had proposed a comprehensive overhaul of the Hebbal flyover junction, which included a new flyover from KR Pura connecting to the KIA-bound national highway, along with new loops to manage traffic toward Tumakuru Road and other directions. However, due to financial constraints, these plans have been put on hold. BDA Chairman NA Haris was unavailable for comment.
