Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike: Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is considering a fare hike of 10-15% for its metro services, according to reports. The Fare Fixation Committee (FFC), which was tasked with reviewing the fare structure, will soon submit its report to the state government.
As per The Hindu, the committee had earlier invited public suggestions regarding the proposed fare increase. This means commuters could soon face higher travel costs on Namma Metro. Currently, the minimum metro fare in Bengaluru is Rs10, and the maximum is Rs 60. Smartcard users enjoy a 5% discount on these fares. The last fare revision took place in 2017.
A three-member committee, headed by Justice R. Tharani (a retired judge of the Madras High Court), has been reviewing the metro fare structure. The committee also includes Satyendra Pal Singh, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and E V Ramana Reddy, the former Additional Chief Secretary of Karnataka.
The committee has examined metro fare structures in various cities, both in India and internationally, to ensure the proposed revisions are fair and balanced. The detailed report, with recommendations, will soon be submitted to the government.
Since the last fare revision in 2017, metro ridership has steadily increased, especially with the expansion of the metro network. The Purple Line, which connects key areas in East Bengaluru, has become an essential mode of transport for IT workers. During peak hours, however, the trains are often overcrowded, with commuters calling for more trains to address the crowding.
Bengaluru’s metro network spans approximately 76 kilometers, making it the second largest metro system in India, after New Delhi.
