After months of bureaucratic delays, Bengaluru’s long-awaited Namma Metro Phase 3 project is finally showing signs of progress. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced plans to soon invite tenders for the 28.4-kilometre corridor linking JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura in Hebbal.
The Central Government had approved this stretch nearly a year ago, but the tendering process received repeated roadblocks, drawing public ire. The project’s delay was largely attributed to the intricate design challenges of constructing a double-decker viaduct that integrates both a metro line and a flyover within the same structure. Now that the detailed design phase has been finalised, BMRCL is preparing to move ahead with the construction, according to a report by Bangalore Mirror.

Bengaluru Metro Phase 3: Key Highlights
Bengaluru's metro network stretches 97 km, catering to 10 lakh passengers daily. Here are the details of the upcoming Phase 3
- The 28.4-kilometre corridor will feature multiple interchange points, improving connectivity with existing metro lines and major city roads.
- A major highlight of Phase 3 is India’s first integrated double-decker viaduct, a structure combining a metro line and a flyover, stretching across 37.12 kilometres. This includes the 28.4-kilometre JP Nagar-Kempapura corridor and an additional 8.6-kilometre section between Hosahalli on Magadi Road and Kadabagere.
- The total estimated cost of the double-decker project is Rs 9,700 crore, approved by the State Cabinet in September. The total cost is split between the State Government (50 per cent), Central Government (10 per cent) and loans (40 per cent). The overall cost is projected at Rs 15,611 crore.
- For the loan, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will extend a loan of Rs 7,577 crore to finance the developmental works for Phase 3.
- The upcoming corridor will include 30 stations, seven of which will serve as interchange points linking to other metro routes. Commercial operations were initially targeted for 2029, but due to tendering delays, completion is now expected around 2031.
- Phase 3 will be further enhanced with the construction of Phase 3A, with the upcoming Blue Line linking Sarjapur to Hebbal.
- The Blue Line aims to ease traffic congestion along key arterial routes, improving access between residential zones and major IT and commercial hubs.
