Bengaluru's Namma Metro on Tuesday announced that it has now started the construction work on two upgrades at the Kadugodi (Whitefield) station. It stated that the decision was taken to ensure better frequency on the crowded Purple Line and to facilitate the route with faster trains. The Namma Metro in the recent months had to face severe criticism for not increasing the number of trains, in spite of the overcrowded trains.

Several of the top officials of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Monday visited the station for inspection. They later stated that new development will boost the public transport infrastructure in the Silicon City and will also provide convenience to the daily commuters. The Purple Line of the Namma Metro runs from Challaghatta to Whitefield, covering a total distance of 43.49 km.

A senior official stated that the new development will ensure that the train does not travel extra distance to start the new trip. “At present, trains go up to the Whitefield depot, which is situated some distance away, and take a turn before arriving at Whitefield Metro station to start a new trip. What we are working on now is extending the existing Shunting Neck (additional side track) on the viaduct by an extra 40 meters so that trains can turn at the tracks here," a senior official was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

However, he stated that the total length of the train is 122 meters, and due to safety reasons, it could not operate in a narrow space. “However, owing to safety reasons, we cannot operate in such a narrow space. After we extend it by 40 meters, it will be safe for trains to make a U-turn at this spot,” he further stated. Though the idea for the expansion was suggested a long time ago, the BMRCL has started the construction work now.
