Bengaluru Namma Metro Update: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Wednesday announced that the operation of Namma Metro's Pink Line is likely to miss another deadline due to delays in the ongoing construction works. While the Pink Line was initially expected to begin its operation by 2020, its deadline was extended to December 2025. However, the authority has clarified that the first phase of the metro is likely to commence its operation in 2026. The much-awaited metro line is expected to provide convenience to thousands of residents by reducing traffic congestion and cutting travel time significantly in multiple key regions.
While providing details, the authority stated that the metro line will not begin its operation in a single attempt, adding that the operation will begin in two phases. While the first phase from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere is likely to begin operation by March 2026, the 13.8-km underground section between Dairy Circle and Nagawara is expected to begin operation by September 2026.
The authority stated that the construction work for both the segments is ongoing and is likely to be completed ahead of the extended deadline. The authority stated that there are several reasons for the delay, including the challenging task of underground construction due to Bengaluru's rocky terrain. It stated that the soil has elements like granite and dolerite boulders, making it tough for the engineers to drill through it.
“The soil conditions include large granite and dolerite boulders. While granite is already extremely hard, dolerite is even more difficult to drill through,” a senior official was quoted as saying by The Hindu. The 21.3-km-long metro line will connect Kalena Agrahara on Bannerghatta Road with Nagawara, providing relief to the thousands of residents along Outer Ring Road. Apart from usual commuters, the metro line will also benefit IT employees of these areas.
