Bengaluru News: Bengaluru Metro has announced new security measures to tackle the issue of passengers consuming chewable tobacco and littering within trains and stations. This decision follows the circulation of a video on social media showing a passenger using gutkha inside a metro train.

To combat this behaviour, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will enhance patrolling during non-peak hours. As metal detectors cannot identify tobacco products, the metro will implement random physical checks at all stations. Platform security staff will be trained to spot offenders and a central surveillance room will monitor passenger conduct, alerting security immediately if violations occur.

In addition to increased surveillance, passengers caught violating these rules will face fines according to BMRCL regulations. The corporation also plans to launch awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about the importance of avoiding chewable tobacco products in metro areas. These initiatives aim to maintain cleanliness and ensure a pleasant travel experience for all passengers.

In separate news, Namma Metro recorded its second-highest ridership on April 17, with over 9.08 lakh passengers, nearly two months after a 45% average fare hike was introduced. Despite an initial dip in commuters, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) noted a renewed preference for metro travel. Most passengers used the Purple and Green Lines, while the Majestic interchange station saw nearly 1.87 lakh users. Although weekday ridership before the fare increase averaged 8.5 lakh, BMRCL has not released monthly figures since February. Officials said the fare revision was necessary to support network expansion and ongoing maintenance, despite not offering multiple pass options.
