Bengaluru News: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been officially dissolved, making way for a new governance structure called the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). The change took effect on September 1, marking a major shift in the way the city will be administered.

Bengaluru: Corporations Replace BBMP

Under the new model, Bengaluru has been divided into five separate corporations, East, West, North, South and Central. Each corporation will function independently and will be managed by senior officials with long administrative experience. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed that local officers currently serving in Bengaluru will be given priority for these posts.

The five corporations together will cover 27 assembly constituencies and 197 wards. The government believes this step will decentralise governance and allow faster response to civic issues. Shivakumar said the decision was aimed at bringing better services to residents and pushing forward stalled developmental works.

Bengaluru Constitutions: Bill Passed In Legislature

The restructuring follows the passage of the Greater Bengaluru Governance (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Legislative Council on August 21. The bill provided legal backing for the new authority and paved the way for the city’s governance to be reorganised into multiple corporations.

On Monday, Shivakumar also launched the Greater Bengaluru Area Development Plan. He explained that the initiative would help the city manage its rapid population growth and address challenges such as infrastructure gaps and urban services.

The state government has assured that only highly experienced administrators will be appointed as commissioners, with a mandate to strengthen civic management and improve day-to-day functioning.
