Bengaluru News: Amid a surge in cases of digital arrest across the nation, a 68-year-old senior citizen in Bengaluru reportedly lost Rs 1.94 crore to cyber fraudsters from his fixed deposit. The victim stated that the fraudsters claimed that they were from the Mumbai crime branch and threatened him with arrest if he did not pay the amount to them.

The fraudsters allegedly held the man under digital arrest for almost a week and claimed that he was involved in a money laundering case linked to Indian businessman Naresh Goyal. The scam began on November 30 when the victim received a video call on WhatsApp from an unknown number. The 68-year-old man claimed that the fraudsters had set up a place similar to a police station, and they sounded exactly like policemen.

The scammers told the victim that he was part of a money laundering case that involved businessman Goyal. The fraudsters also claimed that they have recovered 247 ATM cards during their investigation. They also alleged that his card was among the cards recovered during the probe. The series of accusations from the scammers scared the victim, and he started falling into their trap. They further claimed that it was established that the victim had received a commission from Goyal and was involved in the crime directly.

“They told me to be at the crime branch in Mumbai for "interrogation", but later agreed to keep me under digital arrest and asked for my bank details,” the victim was quoted as saying by the Deccan Herald. The scammers directed the victim to not discuss the case with anyone as it will be against the law. As part of this "investigation", the scammers pressured the victim to transfer Rs 1.94 crore in multiple installments.
