Bengaluru News: In a special effort to combat the issue of drinking and driving, the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) conducted a special drive against the drunk drivers between December 5 and 8. The police stated that the drive was successful, as a total of 183 cases were registered in the span of 4 days. BTP informed that the drive was conducted in several locations in the city, and a total 16,384 vehicles were inspected in the process.
The police seized the driving licenses of the offenders, and those were sent to the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) for suspension. The police informed that the special drive was conducted until 4 pm on Monday, and a case was registered against 379 drivers for using no-entry routes. The traffic police also collected a fine of Rs 1.92 lakh in the special drive. Apart from this, total 986 cases were registered against the drivers for other traffic rule violations in several parts of the city.

A total of 260 cases were registered for one-way violations, 156 for no-parking offenses, 82 for footpath riding, 50 for triple riding, and 59 additional cases for riding vehicles on footpaths. The BTP collected a huge amount of Rs 4.98 lakh during the special drive.
However, this was not the first time that the Bengaluru traffic police decided to act against the drunk drivers. The police also conducted a special drive ahead of Diwali in October this year; the police conducted a long-week drive against the drunk drivers. While the police registered 314 cases of drink and drive, 222 cases were registered for over-speed.
“The Bengaluru traffic police conducted a special drive from 21.10.2024 to 27.10.2024, against drivers/riders driving/riding their vehicles under the influence of alcohol. The drive was carried out across the city, in all traffic police stations,” the traffic police was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

“The special drive was aimed to curb the menace of drunken driving and ensure road safety… The traffic police will continue to conduct such drives to enforce traffic rules and regulations,” the traffic police said in a statement on the pre-Diwali drive, warning of several such drives. The police have assured that they will not tolerate rule violations and strong action will be taken against those who violate rules.
