The green city Bengaluru moves a step closer towards getting its long-awaited and long-discussed second airport, as the state government is likely to receive a feasibility report from the Airport Authority of India within two weeks, as per the Industries Minister MB Patil.
According to a report by Deccan Herald, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) conducted an on-site feasibility study in April at three shortlisted locations. Two of these locations are situated along Kanakapura Road near Harohalli and are land parcels of 4,800 acres and 5,000 acres. The third location is situated on Kunigal Road near Nelamangal and spans across 5,200 acres.
The report was reportedly submitted to the Ministry of Civil Aviation on June 23. It has not yet reached the Government of Karnataka, even after Patil holding a meeting with the Civil Aviation ministry to expedite the process.
The ministry is reportedly waiting for clearance from the environment department before sharing the report with the state government. “Both Kanakapura and Nelamangala sites face waterlogging issues. This is not unusual, as Bengaluru itself is prone to such problems due to its waterbodies. The proximity and elevation of Bannerghatta Hill is also a factor under consideration,” the official was quoted as saying in the report.

It is indicated that officials may pick Kanakapura as it appears to be the best fit after analysing the pros and cons. According to the report, sourcing officials, two locations in Kanakapura are being considered as one parcel, covering nearly 9,000 acres. The final decision is yet to be taken, as it depends on the Environment Ministry.
Patil further assured that once the report is out, the state government will address the environmental concerns through a committee and by engaging a private firm that has expertise in large airport projects.
