Bengaluru News: A 17-year-old girl, along with four of her minor friends, allegedly killed her 34-year-old mother and staged the scene as a suicide in south Bengaluru’s Uttarahalli area. The crime came to light after the teenager’s suspicious behaviour led her relatives to alert the police.

According to the police, the incident occurred on the night of October 25 at the woman’s residence on 6th Main Road, near Circle Maramma Temple Road. The victim, identified as Netravathi, lived with her daughter after separating from her husband. She worked as a telecaller and helper at a loan recovery firm.

Initially, neighbours and relatives believed that Netravathi had taken her own life. However, police investigations revealed that her daughter and four male juveniles, aged between 13 and 17, were allegedly behind the murder. Among the accused, one is a 13-year-old boy who remains absconding.

Suspicion Leads To Confession

The case took a turn when the teenage girl went to her grandmother’s home in Kaggalipura a few days after the alleged suicide. Her family noticed inconsistencies in her story and informed the police. Under questioning, the girl reportedly confessed that she and her friends had strangled her mother and staged it as a suicide to mislead everyone, as reported by a Times Of India report.

The Times Of India report cited Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Anitha B Haddannavar as stating that, a case has been registered under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint filed by Netravathi’s elder sister, Anitha.

Dispute Over Relationship

Investigators said Netravathi strongly opposed her daughter’s relationship with a 17-year-old school dropout, who is among the accused. The boy and his friends frequently visited the girl’s house, which had led to several arguments between the mother and daughter.

On October 20, the group allegedly went to Netravathi’s house and assaulted her and her partner, Ravi Kumar. They reportedly threatened the couple and took Rs 15,000 in cash before fleeing. Following the incident, Netravathi filed a police complaint against the minors. Her landlord, upon learning about the altercation, asked her to vacate the property.

Netravathi was planning to move to Chikkaballapur district with her partner on November 3. She also warned her daughter’s boyfriend to stay away from her home and from her daughter.

Murder Planned In Mall

A few days later, on October 24, the girl allegedly met her friends at a shopping mall, where they planned to kill Netravathi. On the night of October 25, the boys arrived at the house, and the girl let them in with a spare key around 11 PM.

When the group entered, Netravathi, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, scolded them and threatened to call the police. Enraged, the boys allegedly strangled her with a towel. To make it appear as a suicide, they hung her body from a ceiling fan with a sari before leaving the house with the girl.

Case Unfolds

Netravathi’s partner discovered the house locked the following morning and assumed she was out. Two days later, her sister Anitha came looking for her and together they found her body through a window. Believing she had died by suicide, Anitha lodged a kidnapping complaint for the missing girl.

It was only after the girl confessed to her grandmother that the police uncovered the murder plot. Except for the 13-year-old boy who is absconding, all the minors have been apprehended and sent to correctional homes while the investigation continues.
