Bengaluru News: A woman was allegedly sexually harassed, assaulted and abused in broad daylight near Bengaluru on Sunday. The incident took place in Renuka Yellamma Layout near Mailasandra, about 12 km from the city centre and was captured on CCTV.
Around 4 PM, the woman had stepped out to buy groceries when a group of men approached and started following her. CCTV footage shows them blocking her path, trying to speak to her and touching her inappropriately. One of the men was seen slapping her when she resisted and attempted to walk away.
According to police, the men allegedly attacked her when she defended herself. She was later rescued by locals and a friend. However, in a surprising turn, her friend, a gym trainer, was arrested for allegedly assaulting one of the accused during the rescue.
According to a NDTV report, the situation escalated further when the group of men allegedly entered her locality and assaulted the residents who had intervened. Another video shows the group trying to break into what appears to be a residential complex.
Recounting the incident, the woman told reporters, “I was walking to the shop when I saw a group of men fighting. They stopped me, used abusive language, touched me inappropriately and tried to harass me. They were intoxicated. The public came forward to help.”
Police suspect the group was under the influence of marijuana and paint thinner during the incident. The woman has filed a complaint at the Bannerghatta Police Station.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 74 for assault or criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, along with other relevant sections.
Police confirmed that complaints have been registered from both sides. While the woman’s friend is in custody, efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the main accused. An investigation is underway.
