Bengaluru News: In a major breakthrough in a multi-state cybercrime case, Bengaluru police have arrested a woman software engineer, already in custody in Gujarat, for allegedly sending hoax bomb threat emails to several schools in the city.
The North Division Cyber Crime Police have arrested Rene Joshilda, who is linked to bomb threat emails sent to six to seven schools in Bengaluru. Her alleged involvement follows an earlier probe in Chennai.
Multi-State Bomb Threats Uncovered
The police investigation revealed that Joshilda’s activities were not limited to Karnataka. Authorities found out that she had issued bomb threats to schools and public venues in several states, including Chennai, Hyderabad, and Gujarat, and had sent hoax emails to multiple schools as well as the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, The Indian Express reported.
Bengaluru Police stated that Joshilda was initially arrested in June by Ahmedabad police. However, during police investigations, it was revealed that she was also responsible for sending hoax bomb threat emails to schools in Karnataka.
She has now been brought to Bengaluru on a body warrant. Authorities have confirmed seven separate cases of bomb threats targeting Bengaluru schools have been filed against her.
In her threatening emails, she allegedly warned she would ‘blow up your schools like the Gujarat plane crash’.
During the investigation led by a special team under Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, police uncovered the sophisticated methods used by the accused. She allegedly used a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to hide her location and identity while sending the hoax emails.
Investigators also found out that she created multiple accounts using virtual mobile numbers obtained through an app called ‘Gate Code’ and operated six to seven WhatsApp accounts to carry out her activities.
Love Turned Into Revenge
Investigators have revealed that the woman’s cyber threats across multiple states were driven by unrequited love. Joshilda was reportedly in love with a man who had rejected her. The plan was intended as an act of revenge, aiming to frame the man in her attacks.
A special investigation team, led by Joint Commissioner of Police (West Division) Vamshi Krishna and DCP (North Division) Nemagouda, is investigating the accused."
