Bharat Bandh On July 9, 2025: Over 25 crore workers from different sectors are expected to sit on a nationwide general strike on Wednesday to protest against ‘anti-worker, anti-farmer, anti-national pro-corporate policies’ of the central government. The protest is called by a joint forum of 10 central trade unions, describing the strike as ‘Bharat Bandh’. Various services, like banking, insurance, postal, state transport and others are likely to be affected. The trade unions have issued a call to ‘make the nationwide general strike a grand success.’
More than 25 crore workers are expected to take part in the strike. Farmers and rural workers will also join the protest across the country,” Amarjeet Kaur of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) told PTI.
The nationwide general strike on Wednesday is likely to impact various public services. “Banking, postal, coal mining, factories, and state transport services will be affected due to the strike,” added Harbhajan Singh Sidhu of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha.
Last year, a charter of 17 demands was submitted by the unions to the Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The unions claim that the government has ignored their demands and failed to convene the annual labour conference for the past decade.
The joint forum of 10 central trade unions said in a joint statement that the government’s labour reforms, including the introduction of four labour codes, are designed to erode workers’ rights. The unions argue that the codes aim to dismantle collective bargaining, weaken union activities, increase working hours, and shield employers from accountability under labour laws. The government has abandoned the country's welfare status and is working in the interest of foreign and Indian corporations.
The forum stated, “Trade unions have been fighting against privatisation of public sector enterprises and public services, policies of outsourcing, contractorisation and casualisation of workforce.”
The nationwide general strike has received support from the Samyukta Kishan Morcha and the joint front of the agricultural workers. The trade unions have called out similar strikes in the past on November 26, 2020, on March 28-29, 2022, and on February 16 last year.
